Vegetarian Hot Dogs in Iceland
Iceland is known for its hot dogs—or pylsur—and they’re one of the country’s most iconic foods. Traditional Icelandic hot dogs aren’t vegetarian, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out! While traveling around Iceland, I found several spots serving veggie and vegan versions, including my absolute favorite in Akureyri.

Their vegetarian option is a little different from a traditional hot dog: seasoned veggie crumble served in a hot dog bun with toppings. A great option if you want to join in on Iceland’s hot dog tradition while exploring Reykjavík.
What I ordered: Veggie crumble hot dog

Pylsuvagninn
A great stop while road-tripping through South Iceland. They offer a vegan hot dog, and I recommend trying it with fries in the bun. It’s filling, messy and exactly the kind of road-trip food I wanted in Iceland.
What I ordered: Veggie/vegan hot dog + fries in the bun

MY FAVORITE! This was the winner for me. Try the vegetarian/vegan Volcano Dog and add cheese if you’re vegetarian. My friend and I both agreed that this was our favorite hot dog stop of the trip.

Note: These locations also serve meat, so they are not exclusively vegetarian or vegan establishments.
You don’t have to miss one of Iceland’s most famous foods just because you’re vegetarian! If you’re road-tripping around the Ring Road, these three stops make it easy to try different veggie versions along the way. If I had to pick just one, the Volcano Dog in Akureyri was my absolute favorite.
